High Speed Vessel Collision Avoidance System Deployment

To support littoral combat, the Department of Defense is testing a high speed vessel (HSV), the USNS STILETTO, potentially useful in maritime interoperable environments.  In designing the STILETTO, the vessel presented challenges in maintaining vessel control and comprehensive navigation displays due to its high operating speed.

In response, Sotera rapidly developed and installed a cutting edge radar display system, in just 45 days, that reduces the level of shipboard systems complexity and is equipped to operate on HSVs.  The system, an automated radar plotting aid (ARPA) and collision avoidance system (CAS), provides a clear picture of other vessels and their movements to avoid dangerous collisions.  As a result, the STILETTO is able to operate safely and effectively at any speed with a single console that allows users to seamlessly switch between radar sources.
